DeAngelo Williams – Read the Interview

April 9th, 2010

DeAngelo Williams shops LIFEandDEATHclothing.comSam Glaser for LIFEandDEATH: We’re here with All Pro Running Back running back, DeAngelo Williams. DeAngelo – during your breakout season you gave some credit to your QB at the time, Vinny Testeverde. What advice did he give you?

DeAngelo WIlliams: Basically saying, he played with some high profile running backs, some hall of famers. Their work ethic, how they approach the game, workouts, life in general. He kinda gave me some of things they did over their careers.

SG: What was your welcome to the NFL moment?

DW: It actually happened in practice my first year here. Chris Jenkins, he’s a nose guard for the jets now. We were in practice, hes like 350 pounds. I just figured, I’ma show the coaches I’m a tough guy, I’ma run this guy over. Just know, it didn’t work out on my behalf.

SG: Let’s transition to fashion. Whenever we see you, you’re in the Panthers uniform. When you go out, what’s your style like then?

DW: 4, 5 years ago before I got to the NFL, when I was in college. I was a sweatpants guy, regular T-Shirt, flip flops. Not flip flops, some shower shoes. I look at myself then and I don’t know how I did it. Now I’m with the V-necks, I consider myself to have a little fashion sense. I’ll rock affliction, g-star… you know.

That’s why I looked you guys up. I knew you guys are really good with fashion. I’ma call you up, check out your website. You got some fly clothes and I really appreciate you linkin up with me and helping me out.

SG: Over the past two seasons, you’ve been a prime time fantasy football player. Do you play fantasy football?

DW: I just started playing last year and I had the opportunity to draft myself. I did the ESPN Fantasy thing. I talked some trash

SG: I understand there was some controversy about your and Jonathon Stewart’s nickname. What happened with that?

DW: Lendale and Chris Johnson, we’re really good friends with those guys. But they said we stole their nicknames “Smash and Dash”. I told them, look, we didn’t steal your nickname, we just made it famous. They called us “identity thef” so we came up with “Double Trouble” cuz it works both ways – if we’re not doin good we’re trouble for our team. If we’re doin good we’re trouble for the other team, so it works both ways. He’s (Jonathon Stewart) trouble, I’m trouble. So that makes us double trouble.

SG: When you look around the league, are there any players that have particularly good style?

DW: I’d say Deion Sanders, Ray Lewis, those are guys in a suit, I don’t really see ‘em in jeans and t-shirts. Sean Merriman, TO, Chad Ocho Cinco – those guys have business style.

SG: Anyone known around the league for having weak style?

DW: Most of the rookies that come in the league – mostly all of em have that weak style, cuz they’re used to the college life.

SG: What are your fashion don’ts?

DW: I never get plaid cargo shorts. I don’t even know why they even make those, it just doesn’t make sense. The pockets never line up with the other material. It makes no sense, its just ridiculous to me. And getting shorts with dots on ‘em. I don’t know where that came from, who wears that!

SG: I understand that several years back you started the DeAngelo Williams foundation. Tell us about the work you’re doing.

DW: If someone has any type of cancer and they can’t afford to pay the bill, we’ll come in and foot the bill, or pay half of it, or get you started. We come in totally anaonymous, no video cameras, no media. It’s between you and foundation. We’re not in the business of putting people on TV who are stuggling.

Gambling On Urban Fashion’s New Mature Vibe (TAP)

by Caletha Crawford

It’s been a rough year for the apparel industry, as by and large consumers opted to reach deeper into their closets rather than their wallets when it came time to get dressed. Across the board, designers were forced to re-evaluate their offerings and prices in an attempt to woo this new skittish, bargain-hungry consumer. The churn of new trends slowed as brands decided the best course of action was to offer familiar looks with a twist in the hopes that shoppers would be more receptive to items that would mix well with their current wardrobes. Whether it worked or whether the sameness provided would-be shoppers with further reason to continue their miserly ways, is unclear.

One thing that is apparent is it was a much more interesting year for the urban market. This segment of the apparel industry made the biggest strides, as labels raced to keep up with their maturing customer base. Fueled by a more sophisticated consumer with ready access to fashion news and information thanks to the Internet, 2009 marked a new chapter for the urban segment. “The customer has grown up in the last year more than I’ve ever seen the customer grow in the past,” said Dohnn Ball, men’s assistant buyer at the Boston-based Karmaloop clothing store. “The manufacturers know that and they’re working hard.” Read the rest of this entry »

PROJECT & S.L.A.T.E. Trade Shows – Buyer’s iPhone photo-journal

February 23rd, 2010

It was an eventful trade show week to say the least. Most newsworthy was a gang-related stabbing at the ROCAWEAR booth at MAGIC @ Mandalay Bay in Lifeanddeath’s back yard. A suspect has been charged with attempted murder.

In lighter news, my brands brought some fresh products and marketing for Summer / Fall. See my iphone pics below:

•convertible sneakers by HUF. Convertible = wear the elastic “laces” in or out… note the sick USA detailing.

•KR3W booth @ SLATE.

•one of my sales rep’s pot socks

•ROCAWEAR booth where the stabbing went down.

•ROCKSMITH designer brown bags
